OPD Reminding Motorists about Dangers of Texting & Driving
The Odessa Police Department would like to remind motorists that texting while driving is illegal. During 2018, the Odessa Police Department responded to 3,978 crashes, with approximately 1,421 of those involving either Texting or Distracted Driving. One in five crashes involves driver distraction, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.
Texting While Driving Reminders:
1) Motorists are prohibited from using wireless communication devices to read, write, or send an
electronic message while driving.
2) Motorists over 17 years of age are permitted to talk on their phones while driving except when traveling through active school zones.
3) Although not recommended, motorists are permitted to use wireless communication devices while their vehicle is completely stopped (For example, waiting at a red light).
4) Texting While Driving can result in a fine of up to $200.
