Odessa Police Reminding Motorists to Slow Down in School Zones
Now that school is back in session, the Odessa Police Department would like to remind motorists to slow down!
During the last calendar school year, the Odessa Police Department issued 510 citations for speeding in school zones and responded to approximately 18 major crashes (including crossing guards) that occurred in school zones.
School Zone Safety Reminders:
1) Be aware of the established 20-25 mile-per-hour school zones.
2) Most school zones use yellow flashing lights to warn motorists of the reduced speed zone.
3) Texas State law prohibits the use of cell phones while the lights are flashing.
4) Please obey school crossing guards and be mindful of all pedestrians using the crosswalks.
Speeding in a school zone can result in a fine of up to $300 and using a cell phone in an active school zone can result in a fine of up to $232. However, the life of a child is priceless and not worth the risk of speeding through a school zone.
