It is a sad reality and heartbreaking for our Odessa Animal Control Officers to see; dogs with distemper. They believe this dog has the second stage of this highly contagious viral disease.
The disease can be fatal and affect multiple organs. Neurological signs can include involuntary twitching of muscles such as in the leg or face.
Dogs can survive distemper, but not without an expensive fight. It can cost hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, to treat distemper successfully.
The video of this dog is a "tame" version of what we encounter when it comes to the disease.
We are working to continue to educate our community on animal issues. We can’t say it enough; it is important to vaccinate, spay/neuter, and contain your furry friends. It takes all of us working together to make a difference!
