[ARCHIVED] Odessa City Council names finalist for City Manager

John Beckmeyer

John BeckmeyerThe Odessa City Council voted unanimously to name John Beckmeyer the finalist for the City Manager job. They spent the day closely interviewing three finalists. A fourth candidate withdrew. T2, the consulting firm hired to help, has said 50 people from around the nation applied. The interviews lasted about two hours each.

So who is John Beckmeyer, and what does he bring to the table? Strong leadership and hard work are the central themes of his wealth of experience. From digging ditches in the oilfield at the young age of 15 to working on a hog farm after college, John doesn’t shy away from difficult jobs. He was humble as he described his leadership style.

“It’s important to see the big picture and execute at the lower levels,” said John.

He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science from Sam Houston State University and has served in various roles, most of his background in the IT field. Currently, he’s the Executive Director of the Republican Party of Texas. John is also the Chief Operating Officer of STEM Software. The company was once based out of Odessa and still serves many clients in the area.

We had to ask about his political tie and whether that could be a potential concern.

“It prepared me for where I am today!”

His example, even within political parties, there are different communities with different values. The goal is to find ways to work together. It’s one of John’s strengths, his diplomatic skills, and the art of approaching conversations of disagreement. He says it’s all in how people talk with one another.

On a more personal note, John has been married to his wife, Teresa, for 36 years next month. They met at a rodeo in Snyder. Together, they have three kids and four dogs. When he’s not working, he loves to golf.

He knows Odessa is a wonderful city with wonderful people!

“I’m extremely excited and grateful to be offered this position.”

The details of the contract are still being worked out.
