[ARCHIVED] Saving Lives

Cody Ritchie

Cody RitchieInspired by his father-n-law, Assistant Chief Cody Ritchie decided to follow in his footsteps. Steve Schwab retired as a firefighter after 29 years at Odessa Fire Rescue. Chief Ritchie looked to him as a role model.

We also asked him about some memorable times in his career. He recalls a situation from a few years ago when AT&T workers were stuck in a manhole. He says a running generator overcame them with carbon monoxide and they were close to death. Fortunately, he and his crew got there in time.

“There’s a sense of accomplishment after certain incidents, you can’t explain it.”

On the lighter side, we talked to him about how he got his nickname “Captain Brody Rickey.” He says media quoted him and somehow got his name wrong. That name stuck and now it’s a funny story that has been passed on over the years. Assistant Chief Ritchie is married with 3 children.
