Today marks Captain Darryl Smith's 30th Anniversary with OPD! We are so glad he chose the Odessa Police Department.
It ALSO happens to be his Birthday today! Happy Birthday, Captain Smith! He is one of the kindest people you'll ever meet and we appreciate his dedicated service.
Captain Smith was raised on the South-side of Odessa. He attended Ector High School until his Junior year. He ended up graduating from Permian High School. As far as his career here at OPD, he's held several roles including serving in the Professional Standards Unit, SWAT Command, and Incident Commander. Currently, Captain Smith is part of our Command Team.
Captain Smith is married to his beautiful wife, Kamye. They have six kids and three grandkids. He says what he likes most about the African American Culture is music, family, and religion. He also told us why he became a police officer. Captain Smith said, "After starting my career, I noticed that there were not a lot of African Americans in Law Enforcement and I wanted to be that positive example so that others would choose the career that I love."
Captain Smith always goes above and beyond to help others. Congratulations on 30 years at OPD! We have posted pictures of him THEN AND NOW.
