Utilities Department
Laboratory Services
The Laboratory Services Division
consists of nine employees who analyze samples from
the
Water Treatment Plant and
Bob Derrington Water Reclamation Plant. Samples
are analyzed to ensure compliance with state and
federal standards as well as to provide information
for operational control of the Plants.
The laboratory is equipped to conduct physical,
chemical, instrumental, and bacteriological
analyses. The
Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has
certified the laboratory to conduct bacteriological
analyses on the City's public drinking water supply.
On a weekly basis, lab personnel collect samples
from throughout the water distribution system for
the analyses required to ensure the water meets the
bacterial standards set by the state and federal
government. The laboratory also addresses any water
quality complaints received from customers.
In addition to samples received from the City's
treatment plants, the laboratory analyzes samples
required by the Pretreatment Program which is
mandated by the
Environmental Protection Agency. These samples
are collected to ensure that industrial and
commercial customers do not discharge contaminants
which will interfere with the operation of the
wastewater collection system on the wastewater
treatment plant, cause violations of discharge
permits or stream standards, endanger the health of
plant personnel, or limit the disposal alternatives
for the wastewater treatment plant sludge or
effluent.
The Laboratory Services Division also provides
contract analytical services for the wastewater
treatment plant operated by
Gulf Coast Waste Disposal Authority and numerous
other local governmental agencies and surrounding
cities.
