Odessa Police Warning Public in Reference to Phone Scam
DATE: July 26, 2018
TYPE OF INCIDENT: Phone Scam
The Odessa Police Department has recently received several complaints in reference to a phone scam involving a person pretending to be an OPD officer.
Citizens have reported receiving several calls from a man claiming to be a sergeant with the Odessa Police Department.
The caller tells the victim that they have not shown up for “Grand Jury” and that they have a “Failure to Appear” warrant. The caller also tells the victim that they owe $2,500 and that they need stay on the line or there could be more consequences.
If you receive any calls regarding this, it is a scam. The Odessa Police Department would like to remind the public that OPD officers will never solicit payment over the phone. Citizens are urged to not give out personal information and to simply hang up.
