Smart Parent Program

November 12, 2015 – The Parks and Recreation Department is working to create a safer more positive environment for sporting activities at Odessa parks.

Odessa is now among many cities participating in the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation’s Smart Parent Program. The Smart Parent Program is designed to create a positive attitude among spectators and participants.

A parent or guardian will be required to participate in training (either online or in a class) on proper etiquette and behavior at sporting events. A certificate of completion will be required before being allowed to utilize City park facilities.

The decision to implement the Smart Parent Program was an easy one according to Parks Director Steve Patton, “sports are an integral part of the West Texas culture and teaching the value of healthy competition with good sportsmanship behavior is a lifelong lesson everyone can benefit from”.
